‘I have two Beagles – mother Harper who is two years old and baby Scout who is six months old. I love all dogs but especially Beagles and I think they are simply the best dogs in the world. People who don’t know Beagles often think they are not intelligent because they can be disobedient and hard to train. The truth is, they are very intelligent but also incredibly wilful. They prefer to do what they want to do and not what you want them to do. Without the proper knowledge and training, they can be overwhelming, which is why so many of them end up in shelters. I too felt overwhelmed when I first got my Beagles. However, I had the good fortune of hearing about Alan Sheppard from the Secret Dogs Business behaviour school in Cheltenham. He offered a small group program in basic obedience training over four weeks. The program is state government accredited and is as reputable as they come, and Alan himself is simply a master with the dogs. He taught the group easy to learn and very useful skills in dog handling and safety at the school each week and tasked us to practice those skills with our dogs during the week. He followed each class with a written summary of the techniques taught, along with other useful written advice. The small group format allowed him to get to know the personalities of the dogs and their specific learning needs, and to provide all in the group with very focussed and personalised instruction. I am very pleased to say, my two Beagles now listen to me most of the time, and are now very easy to manage and enjoy.
